What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy is a research-supported approach that helps the brain and nervous system process distressing memories, triggers, and emotional patterns that may not have fully resolved through time, insight, or talk therapy alone.

You do not have to have one single “big trauma” to benefit from EMDR. EMDR may be helpful for painful memories, anxiety, grief, betrayal trauma, childhood wounds, panic, shame, performance blocks, or emotional reactions that feel stronger than the present situation seems to explain.

EMDR and the Mindbody Connection

At Mindbody Counseling & Wellness Center, EMDR is not treated as a mechanical technique. The work may include attention to your body, nervous system, emotions, beliefs, protective parts, and the deeper meaning your system has attached to what you have lived through.

The goal is not to force anything. The goal is to create enough safety, structure, and support for your system to process what has remained unfinished.

Session Options for EMDR

Some clients use EMDR within standard 55-minute therapy sessions. Others prefer extended processing sessions, usually around 1.5 to 3 hours, when they want more spacious time to settle in, process, and integrate.

Some clients travel from farther away and choose longer EMDR sessions so the drive feels worth it and the work has enough room to unfold.
